Herbert Parnell – Specialist Dental Accountants

As a dental professional, what should you expect from your accountant?

The first requirement for any client is that they take care of the basics – properly preparing your annual accounts and tax returns.

But it isn’t just about technical competence – it matters how it is delivered. You should be able to develop good working relationships with people who can explain things at the right level for you.

You should also receive prompt responses to requests for information, and your annual accounts work should be completed in time for you to plan your tax payments well in advance.

It goes even further than that. A good accountant will look for ways to maximise your financial position and link it with your wider personal circumstances and goals. This means assisting with practical commercial questions, as well as advising on tax savings and planning for retirement.

At Herbert Parnell, we will look to do all of these things, but also to bring our experience of working with the dental sector for over 30 years, so that the advice we give is relevant to you and your practice. In the continually changing world of dentistry we think that you really will benefit from our specialist experience.

How do I identify a good dental accountant?

We think that there are some key questions which you ought to be able to ask your accountant. If you would like a copy of our free questionnaire just fill out this short form and we will send it to you. There is no further obligation on your part, although we would be very happy to talk to you about how Herbert Parnell could work with you in future. Click here and download your questionnaire.

Herbert Parnell are members of NASDAL, the “National Association of Specialist Dental Accountants & Lawyers”, an association of independent UK accountants and lawyers who specialise in the accounting, tax and legal affairs of dental professionals. Its members share technical knowledge and commercial information about the dental sector and aim to raise standards of advice to dentists. You can find out more about NASDAL via the following link

This firm’s involvement with the dental sector goes back about 30 years, and was initially built up by a former partner, Richard Barwick.

For over 10 years it has been headed up by Andrew Hodgetts, one of the three current directors. Andrew advises on a wide range of business, accounting, and taxation issues, but has a particular interest in helping clients with financial forecasting and management information. Andrew has been the Honorary Treasurer of the National Association of Specialist Dental Accounts for several years.

It is quite common to find professionals who have chosen to specialise either by work or client type. It can be good for the professional who can re-use their knowledge efficiently, and who can mark themselves out from the crowd. But what does it really benefit the client …

We think the benefit to the client comes from us acquiring knowledge that not everyone has. This means …

  • Having a better understanding of the way the client’s business operates
  • Simply spending more time doing that type of client work
  • Getting exposure to a wider variety of clients within that sector
  • Being willing to invest more time in training and systems which are focussed on the specialism
  • Mixing with others who are also active in the sector to expand technical knowledge and to obtain contacts
  • Building relationships to share information and expertise and obtain material which isn’t available to non specialists
  • Raising technical standards within the sector

The National Association of Specialist Dental Accountants and Lawyers was founded to promote all of these objectives. Herbert Parnell was among the founding members of NASDAL and are proud to be part of a professional community that is continuing to promote quality professional services to the dental sector. As well as meeting regularly, NASDAL members compile the largest annual survey of dental practice performance, and also maintain data on practice valuations and sales. Full details of these statistics are only available to clients of NASDAL members.

Comments from some of our dental clients …

“For me it is all about knowing you can do business with someone you can trust, and that they will work hard on your behalf. Herbert Parnell excels at this.”

“We are not accountants. We just want a good job done and communicated in a simple way. Herbert Parnell excels at this. They provide an outstanding service and are very responsive to our enquiries and requests.”

“We are very happy with the service that Herbert Parnell provides. They are very reliable and do what they say they will do. Critically, our communications are open and honest which is a vital quality in any professional working relationship.”

“We were both very impressed at the meeting by the way you have done the figures and your advice. Nathan too inspired confidence as he obviously knew the practice inside out and miraculously could find things in the mountain of papers. Our book keeper also enjoys working with you both.”
